Busy Bees during our Literacy session

Activities students have been involved in during today's literacy session were:
- Practicing the sight word 'the' that they've learned in their reading book
- Sounding out words that they are not sure of in their new reader for the day
- Working on and reading their poem for the week
- Practice writing the letter 'a'

Developing literacy skills

While meeting with a small group of students for guided reading (where they are supported to learn to use reading strategies), our other students were learning to develop their literacy skills through various activities.

Students had to trace over the highlighted sight words and say the words they knew. They also decorated it. Here are some...

Phonics

Students worked on the letter 's' today. They listened to the first sound while looking at the picture card, read the letter and wrote the letter in response to hearing the sound on their whiteboards.

Afterwards, students found pictures starting with 's', cut it out and paste it onto a sheet.

The letter 'l'

We have been learning the letter 'l'. Students practice writing it, saying the letter name and sound and then did and activity on the Notebook. There was some great co-operation on display, also with some visitors from the Kindy.

It begins with the letter...

Students showed how they learned a beginning letter sounds. They used Explain Everything to complete an activity and then drew a picture about something starting with the letter 'r'.

Task:
Use Explain Everything, take a photo and complete the activity. Add another page and draw a picture starting with the letter / sound.

Students did a letter game (in two groups). Someone pulled out a letter from a container, students made the letter sound and then coloured it in on their sheet...

Learning to retell a story and say what they like...

Students have been learning to retell the book they read.



It begins with the letter...

Students were learning the letter 'e'. They had to find pictures of the letter,  take a photo and put it into a Pic Collage...

Literacy rotations

Students who just started school were busy learning to read from left to right and to look at the pictures to help with the story

Some students were working on a word game to reinforce automatic recognition of high-frequency words on the iPads

With matching words and pictures (Letters & Sounds), students practiced their decoding skills

Sight Word practice

Students had the opportunity to use white boards, coloured word cards, letter punches and stencils to practice their sight words. This also assists in getting them to practice fundamental fine motor skills and helped with learning to spell their words correctly.

Independent reading...

In this activity students had to read their book independently and organised information to re-tell the story to show their understanding of the book.

Students had to:
- Re-tell the story in a quick way with all the important parts
- Think about the type of text: fiction / non-fiction
- Say what they liked about the story

Challenge:
Use 'Tellagami' to create a project / product.

How?
Students created a 'Tellagami' to share a quick animated video. They saved their completed Gamis to the iPad camera roll and then published the Gami on their ePortfolio.


Word Families...

Students engaged with word families for our activity. 

Students are learning to:
- Recognise, read and write word families
- Use letter patterns to create new words
- Read words that have similar patterns with fluency

Challenge:
Use 'Popplet' to create a project / product.

How?
Students added a picture that is part of the word family in the middle and added text by typing along the bottom of the popple. They continued adding words that rhyme with the chosen word family. Once they were finished, the saved their popplet to the iPad camera roll.

Challenge:
Use more than one app to create a project / product.

The Challenge How:
- Open Explain Everything
- Import the Popplet
- Talk about what they did
- Publish on their ePortfolio

It begins with the letter....

Students showed how they are learning a beginning letter sounds by taking photos of items that begin with a letter that they are learning.

Task:
Find pictures that begin with a specific letter (choose one that you are still learning about)

The How:
- Used their iPad to take photos of different things that begin         with the letter ___
- Open Pic Collage
- Import the pictures
- Save collage to the iPad's camera roll.

Challenge:
Use more than one app to create a project / product.

The Challenge How:
- Open Explain Everything
- Import the Pic Collage
- Talk about the letter
- Publish on their ePortfolio
