Stories after listening to a Nursery Rhyme

This term, the Year 1 students will be having a nursery rhyme recitation competition. 

We listened to the story 'Mary had a little lamb' and talked about the difference between “true” and “make believe.” They decided whether they think it might be true or a made up story. 

They wrote about an animal they would like to bring to school... Here are some of the stories:

Maths: Position (Left and Right)

In Maths our students were introduced to left and right. They used their hands to discuss the L on the left side. Students turned around and then discussed how it never changes.

They also had to touch something with their left or right hand in class.

Market Day

We had a great end to Term 2 with a Market Day organised by Room 3. There were a lot of fun activities in which the students participated.

Learning the NPeW Theme song

Today, we started to learn the Ngā Pūmanawa e Waru (NPeW) Theme song which was taught to us by NPeW ‘Communication & Engagement’ team member and talented Rotorua -based singer / songwriter, Mr Russell Harrison.

Digital Citizenship / Cyber Safety (#1 - #5) ‘What have we learnt?

Students talked to each other and discussed what they have learnt this term during our Digital Citizenship / Cyber Safety sessions. Some drew pictures to show what they remembered...

Task: Create something of your choice

Today students were given an opportunity to use the iPads to create something of their choice. The only requirement was that they should explain what they did. Here are their creations:

Maths: Learning to make patterns

The students in Room 4 have been learning to make patterns that involve translations, reflections, and rotations as part of the 'shape and transformation' strand in maths. Today they made reflections patterns from fruit as a fun and final activity. They all had their 5+ a day today!

Inquiry: Volcanoes

This term our students explored and described natural features and resources. Key ideas were:

1. Volcanoes are found in many places on planet earth, on land and undersea

2. Heat inside earth melts rock to produce magma. Magma appears at earth's surface as lava.

3. Because earth’s crust is relatively thin, there are places where molten rock can break through the surface.

4. There are different kinds of volcanoes

A map of NZ and pictures of volcanoes in NZ was used. Students were assisted to draw arrows showing where each volcano is located.

Students then independently drew and labelled a picture of a volcano using the labels brainstormed as a class and took a photo of their completed work.

Reading book retell

Students are learning to retell main events/ideas from their reading book in order with relevant detail. They could use their iPad and choose how they were going to retell the story.
