Augmented Reality using Quiver

The students learnt to use a new App called Quiver. This was a fun way to get them to reflect and talk about their participation in yesterday's Cluster Summer Sports.

After choosing one of the two pictures provided, students coloured it using their favourite colours and then watched as their picture came to life just the way they've coloured it.

Students took a screenshot and published their 'reflections' on their blogs.

The Poppy - Anzac Day

We started our discussion about Anzac Day by talking about how we protect those we love, how our families protect us and how we protect our pets. Then we moved into how men who loved our country and its people went to war to protect it and what the meaning is of wearing a poppy.

Students drew a poppy, talked about it and published it to their blogs.

Kotahitanga Art

We shared ways that we can be even more co-operative in class and out of class times. We stood in a circle and turned around when we thought of something.

We are a team. We co-operate, work together and help each other. At home we are part of a family. We are part of a community and a country. We are part of the world.

That’s Kotahitanga.

Wood sculptures made with a chainsaw

Our school is getting a new entrance way and some of the tress had to be removed. Two logs from the ceder tree felled were used to make carvings. We were lucky to have Merv at our school to carve these wood sculptures with his chainsaw.

We feel happy that this lovely timber will be preserved in this way. When the sculptures are dry, they will be sanded and oiled for placement within our school gardens.

A dental truck

We are being visited by the dental nurses. They have a dental truck where we get our teeth check.

Today during our Learning Centre time, our librarian read us a story called 'Visit to the Dentist'. We are not scared and look forward to getting our teeth checked.

Here we are showing how to brush your teeth

We also got a toothbrush and toothpaste. Yay!

Using the Key Competencies in drama

Students continued their learning about Drama with Whaea Jude as part of 'The Arts' curriculum.

Whaea Jude read the story 'The little Blue Duck' to build a drama experience and discussed the Big Question 'Why should we co-operate/ work together/ use kotahitanga?'

The students learnt:
  • That each performance must begin and end with a frozen image and include a slow motion to freeze frame where the tension is the greatest.
  • Voices can be used.
  • Use spoken thought at most tense moment and each one performed to the class.
  • To give feedback about what worked and didn’t.

They used the Key Competencies to:
  • Listen, observe, plan and create multiple drama moments (Thinking)
  • Become drama literate: Using language of drama to describe and reflect on their own and others’ work (Using language, symbols and text)
  • Self-discipline in the creation of their work: time, space, action (Managing Self)
  • Work cooperatively and alongside others. Students reflect on others’ dramatic creations (Relating to others)
  • Take part in drama opportunities that will increase their knowledge and confidence to self-express (Participating and Contributing)
Students were reminded that gesture and facial expression will help them with performing in mime to the class as the conventions of mime is no talking. They had to start with a frozen image and end on another freeze.
