We put together a list of 29 words that we think are unique to Kiwis. We posted them on the 29th Feb Blog which was a Global Blogging project in 2012.

Here they are:
ads: TV commercials
bach: small holiday home, pronounced "batch"
bloke: usually a man, and often used when referring to a stranger
blow me down: expression of surprise
boxing day: the day after Christmas Day
brekkie: Short for 'breakfast'
car park: parking lot
cardy: woollen button-up-the-front jersey (also cardie)
cheerio: good bye
choc-a-block: full to overflowing
choice: very good
chook: chicken
crook: sick, unwell
cuppa: cuppa tea, cuppa coffee, cuppa milo
cuz: as in male or female cousin
gummies: gumboots
hard case: joker; comedian
jandal: thongs, flip-flops
Kiwi: New Zealander
L&P: fizzy soda water, Lemon & Paeroa
nana: female grandparent
puckeroo: Something that is broken
sammie: short for sandwich
sunnies: sunglasses
sweet-as: a term people say instead of "cool" or "awesome"
ta: Thanks
tea: dinner
togs: swimsuit, bathing suit
wop-wops: out of the way location

School Triathlon/Duathlon

We enjoyed yet another great school event!
We started by swimming in our pool, then cycling round the field and finally we had to run the area set out for us. It was lots of fun.

In the Learning Centre

We had a great time in the Learning Centre, making our own Browsing Cards. We issued our first books for the year.
Tracey read us a story before we had to go back to class.

A visit from Coco

Our School Dog, Coco is losing his baby dog teeth as he is going to be a big dog soon.
We read Coco’s blog and asked him some questions.
The next day, Coco and Ms Matthews brought one of his teeth into our class to show us what it looks like. We were very good at sharing and passing the tooth along to everybody.



Ms Matthews said the tooth fairy gave Coco cat biscuits (because Coco likes it) and not money. We are so glad that we don’t eat or like cat biscuits...!

About me

We have Learning Buddies in our class, and need to get to know each other to be able to learn and work together. We used a 'Me maker' programme to 'create' ourselves.
We introduced our buddies and what they like, to the school during assembly.

A letter from Harold

We received a letter from Harold, thanking us for the 'Get well' cards we made him!

'All Together' with Harold

Harold, Jude and the Life Education bus visited our school. We learned that we are all special and unique and need to look after ourselves and others.

Our focus was on friendship/love and safety at school.


We explored our basic needs and looked at the human body, thinking about major organs that keep us alive. We had a go at finding some of these organs, practising on Tam!




Harold told us that he injured his horn, while skateboarding. He did not have his helmet on! We felt very sorry for him and made him some get well cards.

We met Harold’s friends, the puppets from the tree. We had to make sure they are happy and healthy through the basic needs of food, water, oxygen, shelter, exercise, washing, sleep, love and safety.


At the end of a wonderful time, we practised and sang the 'All Together' song
