Practicing Basic Facts

One group of students used our egg cartons to practice their basic facts. They shook the closed egg carton and when they opened them, the beads had landed on some numbers. Students then added the numbers together, using their iPad and Explain Everything to record their learning.

The other groups took part in the following activities:

- Using the 10 Frame Fill on their iPad, students practiced recognizing additive "10 Families" (e.g., 1 and 9, 2 and 8, etc.)

- Using the 5 Frame on their ILP, students had the opportunity to think about numbers using frames of 5 which is a helpful way to learn basic number facts

- Using the Count Your Chickens game, students were developing their counting and number recognition skills by counting the number of chicks on the screen and selecting the correct number

After completing their activity, some students also had 'choosing time'...

Learning to re-tell stories...

Our students are busy learning to re-tell stories... Here are some of them:

It begins with the letter...

Students showed how they learned a beginning letter sounds. They used Explain Everything to complete an activity and then drew a picture about something starting with the letter 'r'.

Task:

Use Explain Everything, take a photo and complete the activity. Add another page and draw a picture starting with the letter / sound.

Word Families...

Students engaged with word families for our activity. 

Students are learning to:

- Recognise, read and write word families

- Use letter patterns to create new words

- Read words that have similar patterns with fluency

Challenge:

Use 'Popplet' to create a project / product.

How?

Students added a picture that is part of the word family in the middle and added text by typing along the bottom of the popple. They continued adding words that rhyme with the chosen word family. Once they were finished, the saved their popplet to the iPad camera roll.

- Publish on their ePortfolio

Students showed how they are learning a beginning letter sounds by taking photos of items that begin with a letter that they are learning.

Task:

Find pictures that begin with a specific letter (choose one that you are still learning about)

The How:

- Used their iPad to take photos of different things that begin         with the letter ___
- Open Pic Collage
- Import the pictures
- Save collage to the iPad's camera roll.

'Must do' and 'Can do' reading activities

Students engaged with various activities during reading time. 

Students' 'Must do' were to use 'Explain Everything' to speak about their favourite character and a part in their reading book they'd like / enjoyed. They then had to published this on their ePortfolios.

Their 'Can do' included activities such as 'Read to Self', 'Read to Someone', 'Listen to Reading' and 'Letter Work'.

Engaging with our Reading books

This week the students used 'Explain Everything' to capture their voice while practicing to talk about their favourite part in the book they have been reading.

Their next step would be to talk about other aspects of their reading book such as such as setting, time, characters, plot, ideas and themes.

Using our blue thinking hats with Explain Everything

We used our blue thinking hats to find our favourite part in our reading books.  We use 'Explain Everything' on our iPads to take a photo of that page, cut it out and then we told some of the story in our own words.
