Students read and talk...

Rooms 3 and 4 had the most amazing buddy reading session in our first week back to school!

Students took turns reading their story aloud with their buddy. Afterwards we tried a new way of discussing the good points as well as any further thinking by introducing the 'Telephone Conversation'. The tuakana 'phoned up' their teina buddy and told them what they liked about their reading and why. The teina had to reply and said what else they did well. Students used all five Key Competencies (Managing Self, Participating & Contributing, Using Language/Symbols/Text, Relating to Others, Thinking) and the Virtues of Respect and Cooperation by listening and working well with their buddy.

We will keep on using this approach in weeks to come, as it is a fun way to develop oral language.

Unison Safe Sparks

Rooms 4 and 5 had a visit from Ethan and Mark from Unison who told our students about all the work that Unison does. Students learned how electricity works and how electricity can flow through some materials easily and how powerful it is. They had a great discussion about what happens when electricity travels through a person and had to think about all the things that we use that uses electricity.

Students learned how to stay safe around electricity by:

1. Staying away from power boxes

2. Staying away from power poles and power lines and to never climb up a power pole

Something interesting they heard was that trees growing into power lines can also give them a shock.

Mark showed them how he have to dress in full safety gear: safety shoes, fire-resistant overalls, special gloves, face shield, safety glasses and a hard hat when he goes out to do a job.

The big message was to:

1. Stay away and don't touch

2. Make sure others stay away

3. Tell an adult a to call 0800 2 UNISON

Students also had a chance to put on some special gloves...

Just a quick 'note' to say a huge thank you for all your support, the lovely feedback I've received and for being engaged in your child's learning this term! By working together we are in a position to making this year great for your child. This can already be seen in all the progress you child has been making.

I hope you have a lovely holiday with your child(ren) and I look forward to seeing you again on Monday 23 July for the start of Term 3.

Goodbye Matua James

Today Room 4 said goodbye to one of the best teachers at Broadlands, Matua James. We invited him into our class to eat marshmallow cake (thank you Halei Aarsen, who baked it for us!) Our students handed him their hand made cards and he was given a signed card from the whole class with a chocolate in...

He then spend time with students, engaging in their play by talking and listening to them...

Making our own Pizzas

One of the many things our students learned in Maths this term was about 'Shapes'. Today students made their own little pizzas... Thank you so much to Halei Aarsen who kindly donated all the 'ingredients'. We all had so much fun!

We had to ask Mr Taylor to help us set the oven...!
