On Sunday five of our Room 4 students entered the Ironkidz Splash and Dash for five to seven year olds in Taupo. A blustery day meant the waves knocked our students about, but they just got back up and gave it heaps, fantastic courage and enthusiasm! What a delight to discover we WON the School Participation Trophy for the most entries from a school competing in Ironkidz... more than schools six times our size and even the school hosting the event. If your child didn't take part this year there is five more opportunities before they leave Broadlands School :)
Splash and Dash at Ironkidz
Splash 50 metres – Participants (in waves of 10) will start in waist deep water to allow those that can swim to give it a go, but those that are not so confident can head back towards the beach if they want to run.
Dash 550 metres – once out of the water students run to the transition area if they wish, where they put on tops and sneakers before beginning their run.
Here we are talking about our story ideas after hearing "Don't let the Pigeon stay up late." The main character wants to stay up and have a 'hot dog' party, we laughed so much at this idea and then started talking with our learning buddies about parties. By sharing our story out loud we can order our ideas for writing...
Jess is now writing her own funny tale about the Pigeon in the story...
Once we finish, we select colours to decorate our frames for our self portraits. The students detailed sketches of themselves are developing fantastically.

Harold's Visit
The Life Education Trust visited this week. The vivacious Judy introduced us to our little hero Harold! He helped us learn about the our bodies needing oxygen and other creatures who do to. We moved like sea creatures, helped Harold choose things he would need for the beach and the whole cycle of oxygen through our bodies then out as carbon dioxide which trees turn back into oxygen. Judy invited students to add parts of the body oxygen moved through... mouth, lungs, blood... and we placed them in order on the wall of the caravan.
Our favourite parts were meeting Harold of course! (we all wanted to hug him) and looking at the stars with him in the life education bus ceiling. To see photos and a small video from the lesson click on the smilebox slideshow below;
It was super to see all whanau supporting tamariki as they competed in their very first school thriathlon! Christopher who is visiting Room 4 came to see his big brother...

This video is a combination of our reflections on the weekend or was something exciting we wanted to share with everyone in Room 4.
We are building confidence in talking about our lives, our world and our learning together.
As classmates we need to "tune in" and listen, having a learning buddy for the whole term helps with this as we share one to one and then with the whole class. When listening to each other we are building language for thinking, reasoning and expression... which we then apply in our writing.
Each of us is beautifully unique, with our own ideas, feelings and stories from home... thanks for watching....
Weekend News in Room 4
A was our letter of the week last week, we learnt a rhyme about Ants which helps us with the sound that 'A' makes.

Here we are seated in our virtual airplane, acting out trips around new Zealand and overseas before beginning our story writing on these experiences or a story idea of our own...
Thank you to Leanne, Bridget and Angelica who have been supporting our Perceptual Motor Programme on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings, this means we can offer more activities to students.
We are saying goodbye to Joshua next week as his family moves to Brisbane, Australia.
With the help of the police, we asked some drivers to watch out for us and to please slow down when going past our school, as we cross the road in front of our rural school regularly.
Thank you to all the drivers who listened patiently to our message and to the wonderful policemen and women who helped us to deliver this very important message.

On Friday we listened to the tale of Stickman, a beautifully illustrated children's book written by Julia Donaldson. They were very excited when Santa turns up to save the day, the good old jolly fellow.
You could show your child these other great tales by Julia, they are funny, full of rhyme and adventure and cool characters. Just click on the title and it will take you to the link on you tube;

Once our stories were written and we had practiced writing the letter 'S'... which can be a tricky one! we collected leaves and chose eyes and decorations for our own Stickman to put on the 'S' table with the Shells, Soccer boot, Skippyjon Jones puppet, Sunflowers and Smurfette.
Each week we will have a place for the letter of the week and things that begin with that letter, next week is 'A' and I would like your child to bring something beginning with 'A' from home if they can...

On Monday I will be introducing story-writing skills we are to develop or extend on in Room 4 and they will be assessed on what they can do and are learning to ensure each child is assisted in achieving more as we go along this term. Here is a copy of the writing skills they are learning;
We are swimming on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 2.30pm until 3.00pm and loving it! A huge thank you to parents/whanau who pack the togs, then dry for the next day... I have to get my daughters ready every day so I know its an extra but we appreciate it. I was really impressed with how capable they all were with changing and dressing! (only a couple of inside out shirts I readjusted ;)
Finally, we wished Denzel a Happy Birthday on Friday, he also had the whole school sing to him at assembly that afternoon.
