On Friday we had a planting day and our class went out to help.

Flower Show

One of the highlights this term is our Flower Show. This serves to promote our creativity through visual arts.

Coco and the Vet

Coco is Room 3's class pet. He is a lovely dog and we like having him at school. When the Vet came in to have a look at him to see if he is healthy and have no fleas, we were able to go and see what was happening to Coco. The Vet also looked in Coco's book to see if he needs any vaccination. Coco was very brave (we were a bit scared!) when he had to get a jab. Coco did not even feel it.
At the end he got a big bone to eat and went to sleep.

Statistics

This term we have been learning about Statistics.

We have collected lots of different data.

We used shapes to complete a bar graph and also made a graph of which flavour ice cream will sell best in our class.

Athletics

What a lovely day of athletics we had on Wednesday with the weather excellent too.

Grandparents' & Friends' day

It was wonderful to welcome so many of our Grandparents and Friends to our class and to be able to share our learning with them.

We had morning tea which was provided and hosted by the students, a Performing Assembly which included Jump Jam and Production dances, a BBQ & Shared Lunch and ended the day with a Minor Games Competition.

Thank you to everybody who came along and enjoyed the day with us.

'Hit it'

We have been learning to play tennis by practising skills like: ball control, racket control, hand-eye coordination, how to hit the tennis ball over the net and how to serve.

Watch out, you might see some of us on Wimbledon one day!

Calf and Pet Day

We had another successful Calf and Pet Day at our school. Some of us brought pets along like: dogs, cats, lambs and calves.

We had to show what our pets are able to do and won nice prizes. It was a lovely day with lots of fun.

'Leg it'

To strengthen our Athletics skills, we are learning to develop effective runing and jumping techiniques by working through a series of progressions.

The Snail

We have 6 new friends in our class this Term!

The boys had to get some chairs for our class from the store room. When the girls were cleaning the chairs, they found a snail on one of them.
Ms van der Spuy took it outside and put it on the path so that we can look how slowly it moves and to observe the trail it leaves behind. We wondered why there is a trail and had some discussions about it.

This snail was not even 'shy' when we picked it up in our hands and did not hide in its house!

RWC 'Dress-up'

The last day of another full term was concluded with a RWC Dress-up.

The All Blacks supporters were in the majority, with two very brave England supporters amongst the staff. We even had a brave Wallaby supporter amongst the students!

This Term, we focused on the Rugby World Cup and our School Production which was about organizing and running our own ‘Big Event’.

We had lots of fun preparing for and performing to our audience.

Co-operative Learning

Room 4 worked with our Buddy class, Room 3 in Co-operative Learning groups. We helped each other to achieve a task and we learned from each other! We had to talk about our ideas, completing an Y-chart and then created a 'Paint' picture or a 'Glogster'.

Cultural Festival

We are very proud of our Kapa Haka performance in a large hall and on a very large stage.
This was our first performance in front of an audience.

Photography

The senior class is holding a Photographic Competition and as our 'Buddy Class' they provided us with some cool advice on how to take good photos.

We went outside with our iPods and cameras and had lots of fun experimenting. At the end, they even helped us to download our photos into our Personal folders.

Rugby Skills - Passing

We Are Learning To make an effective pass, where the player must carry the ball in two hands at chest height, spreading their fingers around the seams of the ball.

When making a pass, you should look at the player waiting to receive the ball in order to ensure the ball is passed in an accurate direction.

Learning with iPods!

Technology is now part of our students' lives and future, but Literacy Skills, Numeracy and other Curriculum Areas will still play an important role in our class as well.

This term we started using our iPods to enhance the learning opportunities in our class alongside our ClassWIKI, Kid Blogs and KnowledgeNET.

Reading on Broadlands FM

The Room 4 Magenta Readers are working very hard on their Reading Skills.

This time it was Thomas who had a change to read to the school on our Broadlands FM radio station.

Our class received a package from the NZRU full of goodies, after we wrote to them about our RWC 2011 theme for this Term. Thank you Ronnie!

What a great experience we had today with some snow flurries falling at our school!

Safety with Electricity

We had a great experience with Sam and Cooch, learning about being safe with electricity.

We learned how electricity works and how electricity can flow through some material easily and how powerful it is.
Cooch showed us how he have to dress in full safety gear and all the equipment he uses.
Then we watched a practical demonstration of how he can get one of our hoola-hoops down from a very high tree.

Thank you Unison for providing this electricity safety programme to our class.

Dynamo Games

Our school Dynamo Leaders organised some outside games for the whole school to participate in on the last day of Term 2.
Although it was freezing cold outside, everybody had lots of fun.

A Surprise Visit

A surprise visit from.... Harold!

We had to assemble in the Learning Centre, but had no idea why. Suddenly Harold appeared! We could not believe our eyes.

We had a wonderful time with him, listening to a story and singing some songs, learning about Friendship, Caring and Kindness.

A great way to end the last week of this very long Term.

Matariki Day

We had yet another enjoyable day in celebrating Matariki at our school. This day was also part of Maori Language week, in which we recognised and practiced the Maori language. Tia te Reo.

On our whole school Matariki Day, we were involved in three activities, which included Matariki arts & crafts (in House groups), Hangi (E ngā ringawera, tēnā koutou - To the cooks, thank you) and then Waiata with Matua Grant.

Shapes

We are learning about shapes. We used our bodies to portray some of the shapes.
We are so good at Co-operation now, that we organized ourselves quickly into groups to 'make' the following shapes:

Rainbow Fish

We are learning about Conflict and Resolution in Room 4. We are using stories to understand this concept. One of the stories that we read was, 'Rainbow fish and the Big Blue Whale.'

We identified parts in the story where everything was going smoothly until something happened that created 'Conflict'. We also identified the part were a 'Resolution' point was reached.
We learnt that by talking about a problem, peace can be made and that we can then work together.

'Move It'

In Room 4 we like to 'move it' and this week we learnt to develop our skills of rolling, stopping, landing, bending, stretching and balance.

We have been involved in the Go4It Gymnastics programme, called 'MoveIt'. We had lots of fun while learning new movement skills.



At the end of our session, we had to work together to get a ball into the middle of a parachute.


And finally, through Co-operation, we did it!!

Word Mosaic 'Patches'

What we've learnt:
The ANZACs were grouped together into Battalions. A Battalion had nearly 1,000 men. When the ANZACs were training in Egypt, they found it very difficult to find their tents at the end of the day because there were so many, and all the tents looked the same. It was decided that each Battalion would fly a flag from their tent with special colours to help the ANZACs find their way.
This was so successful, the ANZACs decided to sew tiny flags onto their uniforms so they could find each other if they were lost in battle.
The ANZACs became very proud of their patches.

What have we done with our Knowledge?
We created our own Patches using a Word Mosaic by choosing a symbol, text and background colour. We then entered our name inside our symbol and post it into our KnowledgeNET Home Area's Welcome Page!

P.E. and Co-operation

We have been practising our Large Ball Skills with Room 1. We learned about positive relationships with our peers and how to make the right choices.

We are learning how to co-operate and work together as a team.

Planting our Vegetables

We learned that in traditional times, Matariki was a season to celebrate and to prepare the ground for the coming year.
Today Matariki means celebrating the unique place in which we live and giving respect to the land we live on.

Conflict Cartoon Interpretation

As part of our Term 2 Inquiry Study, we discussed the meaning of Conflict and what we can do to solve a problem. To help us understand this, we choose a cartoon to Identify, Describe and Analyse our thoughts.

We cut picture strips, sorted them in the right order and glued them onto our sheets.

We learned that Conflict can be resolved with Co-operation.

Caught Being Good

There are many different kinds of animals, and they all make up the animal kingdom. Some animals eat plants and some eat other animals. Some live in the ocean, and some live on land. There are different animal kingdoms.

Today we choose a book about an animal that we like, to look at in the Learning Centre.

Some of us learnt some fascinating facts.

Feelings

We learnt about why it is important to think about peoples feelings.

We read "Giraffes can't dance"
* Gerald felt sad when he though he couldn't dance.
* Then the cricket was kind and taught him he could.

School Cross Country

Room 4 had an enjoyable day after training hard for this event.
Well done everyone -you can be proud of yourselves!

Reading

One of our class members had the opportunity to read the story 'Miss Pool Is Cool' on our Broadlands FM Radio Station.

'Kick It' on another Rainy Day

It started to rain soon after we began another 'Kick It' session with Johan!

We decided to improvise and to move the furniture in our class to do some fun games, so we could still practise our soccer skills.

We enjoyed this so much and did not want to stop when our time was up.

We will never forget

When our soldiers looked out from the trenches during the fighting they saw red poppies growing wild in the fields and they imagined each poppy represented a dead soldier.
Each year on Anzac Day, we wear poppies to remember those that died.

Our School Trip to the National Army Museum

To support our Term 2's study 'Conflict and Resolution', we visited the National Army Museum, Waiouru, which is a military history and army war museum. We experienced New Zealand's military involvement in conflict from the Land Wars to the more recent peacekeeping missions in the 21st century.
We think the Museum has an excellent collection of historical New Zealand army photographs, memorabilia and equipment.

"We will remember them...."

The Greenstone Wall is a unique interpretation of the New Zealand Roll of Honour. It commemorates the sacrifice of more than 30,000 men and women of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Merchant Marine in the service of their country.

The Greenstone Wall features an audio-visual system which continuously intones the names and service details of our war dead.


We were amazed that the troops would spend eight days in a trench like this in really appalling conditions. They would then spend the next eight days in billets behind the lines before moving back into the trenches again.


We had a wonderful day and could even dress up like soldiers! On the way back to school some of us were so exhausted that we fell asleep in the bus.
