We had Stu from Firewise talking to our junior students about fire safety...

    

Students learned:

• If they find a lighter or matches, they should give it to an adult and should not play with it
• Candles must be secure. Put it up high, not near curtains
• Once curtains catches fire, the fire spreads quickly

• Black thick smoke will fill the room / house
• Get down low, so they are away from the smoke
• When there is a fire: 'Get down, get low, get out fast' and shout: "fire, fire, fire!" on your way out

Some important things to remember...

• A safe place to go to could be a letter box or cowshed. Talk to your parents about where your safe place is
• You need two ways out of your bedroom... a window & door
• If the fire is outside the door, shut the door and get out the window
• If you have to check the door when it is closed, feel with the back of your hand
• Keep away from matches, lighters and candles

Staying safe

Today John Parsons and Constable Tash were working with Rooms 4 and 5 on how to keep themselves safe.

Constable Tash talked about the 'Classification Traffic Lights' and the classification they need to look at, before they watch a movie or play a video game.

G - General. Everyone can watch

PG - Slow down! Ask you parent

M - Stop! You should be over 16 to watch or play

Remember if the classification is red, they should not watch it

Officer Tash explained that if we read every day/night it makes good pathways in our brain. By watching or playing movies or games that are too 'adult' for our brain it makes bad pathways in our brain and can cause 'explosions' in our good pathways. 

Johan talked to the students about having a blue safe circle around their waist. In that circle is: family, friends and self.

If being asked personal questions like name, age, address, school, they should:

 'Zip it'

'Lock it'

'Put it in your pocket'

If someone is mean online, they should not say anything back, just leave the game. They should use a power pose as their coping tool.

John told everyone to NEVER ignore the butterflies (the funny feeling) in their tummy. Instead they should feed it by taking 2 - 3 deep breaths. This is to calm them. Then they should talk to someone they trust i.e. a parent, teacher, police officer. Remember that a police officer should have their vest on. If they are still not sure, they can ask for their identification.

Students should remember...

- people they don't know are strangers

- be nice to people online like on the playground

- keep personal information private

- if they ever feel 'butterflies' in their tummy, they should tell an adult

Students should tell themselves...

- I am valued

- I am loved

A visit from Stu Duval - New Zealand’s master storyteller!

New Zealand author, illustrator and storyteller, Stu Duval visited our school today, sharing stories with our students and showed them how to draw cartoon characters.

After this wonderful, inspiring and creative day, I am sure that Broadlands School will produce many budding authors and artists.

Unison Safe Sparks

Rooms 4 and 5 had a visit from Ethan and Mark from Unison who told our students about all the work that Unison does. Students learned how electricity works and how electricity can flow through some materials easily and how powerful it is. They had a great discussion about what happens when electricity travels through a person and had to think about all the things that we use that uses electricity.

Students learned how to stay safe around electricity by:

1. Staying away from power boxes

2. Staying away from power poles and power lines and to never climb up a power pole

Something interesting they heard was that trees growing into power lines can also give them a shock.

Mark showed them how he have to dress in full safety gear: safety shoes, fire-resistant overalls, special gloves, face shield, safety glasses and a hard hat when he goes out to do a job.

The big message was to:

1. Stay away and don't touch

2. Make sure others stay away

3. Tell an adult a to call 0800 2 UNISON

Students also had a chance to put on some special gloves...
