Digital Citizenship / Cyber Safety #5 (2017)

This week our students worked on ‘An important thing to remember’. Using the worksheet from 'Heroes' on Hector's World, students learned to avoid the mistake that Hector and his friends made, of giving out their personal information online.

They learnt to:

1. Ask a trusted adult before doing anything online

2. Always get help from a trusted adult if anything worries them online

While meeting with a small group of students for guided reading (where they are supported to learn to use reading strategies), our other students were learning to develop their literacy skills through various activities.

Our students started painting their box heads for our 'Mindcraft' production. Thank you to Theresa, one of our parents, and to some of Room 2's students who came to help us. 

Discovery Time / STEAM - Engineering/Structures #3

Students did some careful planning and also relied on their problem solving skills. Today's challenge was 'Build the tallest structure with the fewest clothes pegs/foldback clips'...

At first it was a bit tricky, but some were able to build structures with only two clothes pegs at the bottom!

Some students came up with other designs that didn’t really fit the challenge, but they had a great time exploring!

Digital Citizenship/Cyber Safety #4 (2017)

This week we talked about how our feelings can sometimes tell us when a situation is not safe, or if we should not trust someone. ‘The Info Gang’ video from 'Hector's World' was a great help to introduce this concept.

Students were learning to always listen to the clues that their feelings are sending to them. They were starting to understand that it is a good idea to ask help from the people they trust when their feelings send them a message that something is wrong.

Biking #1

Our students had their first biking session in which they learned how to fit their helmet properly. Tip: When the helmet fits properly, it should stay on when the head is tipped over and the straps are undone.

They also had an opportunity to bike around the car park.

Why read alone when you can read with a 'Reading Buddy'?

Our students paired up for our tuakana/teina one-on-one reading in a safe, fun and friendly environment. Our goal is to provide students with extra reading practice and also to provide the tuakana with leadership skills.

Discovery Time / STEAM - Engineering/Structures #2

In this session, students had to use their planning and problem solving skills. Today's challenge was 'Build the tallest structure using only the supplies given to you'...

Students used a ruler to measure who's structure was the tallest. The winners... Jeremy and Blake with 17cm, followed closely by Jack F and Riley with 11cm. Well done to you all! You used the virtues of 'Perseverance' and 'Creativity'!

Position and Direction with 'Simon Says'...

Students' prior knowledge of the topic of position was determined by asking a series of questions that required answers that used position and direction language, eg. Where are the crayons? (On the shelf, at the back of the class.) Where is Sarah sitting? (On the mat, beside Sally, behind Lia.) 

Where would I have to walk to get outside? (Around the teacher’s desk, past the tote trays, through the door.)

Some questions were also asked to test students understanding... I am thinking of something that is under Sam’s desk – what is it? (chair). I am thinking of something that is on the shelf beside the dictionaries – what is it? (atlas).

Students then played a game of Simon Says, using language of position and direction.

Creativity using Clay

Mrs Fitzgerald explained the process of making 'pinch pots' to our students. They learned to:

- Become familiar with the texture and feel of clay

- Use the pinch method to make pottery

- Work three-dimensionally using clay
