Cultural Festival

We performed our Kapa Haka items at the Reporoa Cluster Cultural Festival, which is held every year in Reporoa.  We all had a great time and at lunch time some of us had hangi.

Thank you to Matua Grant and Whaea Martha who helped us during our weekly Kapa Haka practices.  We are lucky to have you.

Using our blue thinking hats with Explain Everything

We used our blue thinking hats to find our favourite part in our reading books.  We use 'Explain Everything' on our iPads to take a photo of that page, cut it out and then we told some of the story in our own words.

Inquiry and our Mosaic Volcanoes

Our Inquiry began last month, the whole school is investigating the Lithosphere, a science curriculum project which is exciting and full of opportunities for critical and creative thinking about our world.

Our BIG QUESTION is "What would happen if a sphere was missing in the world?", firstly though we needed to explore what the earth's spheres are...

Using a SOLO Taxonomy definition map in class we brainstormed the words relevant to the Earth's Sphere.  All students participated a whole class ontological search, meaning we looked at images that came up when we searched those Earth and Sphere and the students then described what they saw.  

These ideas were written down on stickies and then we decided where to place these words on the SOLO map.  Here are our discoveries;

Later on in the week we looked at many library books about the Lithosphere to come up with some things that we see belong in it, here is McKenzie's list from our work in our group storywriting book;

We are passionate about volcanoes, they are cool! we want to make our own three dimensional volcano to create lava flows with baking soda and vinegar.  But first... we thought we could design two dimensional volcanoes and make them with mosaic pieces on tiles.  

With the support of our Art Teacher Mrs Sutherland and Caleb's Oma and Auntie Krystal we have been busy drawing, designing and piecing these together.  What rich learning as we learnt to represent the magma and lava bursting out of the lithosphere from the earth's core.

Performance of 'What I Am' at Assembly

Recently we performed our own version of Sesame Street and Will I am's song titled "What I Am".  

This was a celebration of individuality and self esteem, originally the song was used to inspire inquiry writing about ourselves and what makes us special.  

Children interpreted the actions for magical, special, friendly, grouchy,  super and many more including the chorus where they sing about getting stronger every day!.
