Whanaungatanga through Art #2

In today's art lesson with Mrs Fitzgerald, our students learned to understand that ‘it is o.k. to be different’...

The lesson sequence were:
- A recap on Whanaungatanga
- Introduction or recap on primary and secondary colours
- Make secondary colours using paint

- Divide card into quarters; paint one square purple, one square green, one square orange and choose any colour for the last square.

Students were then introduced to the new topic ‘It’s o.k. to be different’. They were reminded that everyone is different and encouraged to be kind to one another. They listened to a book, ‘It’s ok to be different’ by Todd Parr

Students created a wild and wacky self-portrait to show they are different and unique...

Learning to act / making choices

After working on their handwriting, students had the opportunity to choose some learning activities they would like to be involved in. We are busy with slowly introducing our students to learner agency...

What is your favourite part in the story?

After reading their book, students talked about their favourite part in the story.

Inquiry #3 - Community: Whanaungatanga, Manaakitanga, Kotahitanga

Mrs Fitzgerald asked the students to drew a picture of themselves on an oval shape card. They discussed where they lived, e.g. house and where their house is (near Broadlands School). Students learned that a 'Community' is a group of people who work together. They then discussed the people in our School Community and their roles, e.g.

- Mere, the Caretaker (Looks after our school)

- Mr Taylor, Principal (Makes rules to keep us safe)

- Teachers (Helps with our learning)

- Tracey, Office Administrator & Librarian

- Whaea Kim, Teachers' Aide

- Police (The one who comes to check our school)

Students created a house out of a paper bag and scrap-booking paper and  glued the picture of themselves onto the house.

Muddy footprints

In this activity we started by listening to a bear story about footprints...

Mrs Fitzgerald showed the students the "bear" footprint and asked:

- Who could this belong to?

- Why do you think that?

- Is your foot as big as the bear's? How do you know? How could you check?
