Inquiry #1 - Community (People) - Marae

To start our inquiry, we discussed the world globe, pointing out our country. We talked about discovering the community in which we live. Today's discussion was about the town and rural community where they go to school, shop and live.

What is a community? 

- Our class is a community

- Our school is a community 

- Our town is a community (etc.)

It is belonging to a group...

Students then worked on a ‘When I Grow Up' activity and drew a picture of what they think they will 'do' when they grow up.

Discovery Time / STEAM - Science/Engineering challenges #1

Students could choose between two session in our first Discover/STEAM session for this year... exploring volcanoes or making a bridge with only one piece of paper. Students had to use the Key Competencies of Thinking, Relating to Others, Managing Self, Participating & Contributing, Using language, symbols and texts for these challenges...

Engineering:

Students had to discuss and plan what their bridge would look like. Then they had to work together to 'construct' their bridge... Everyone also practiced the Virtue of 'Perseverance'...

 

Science:

Adding materials to observe the outcome and painting their volcanoes...

Key Competency: Relating to Others (Respect)

We invited Room 5 over to join us in discussing 'Relating to Others'. We started out by watching and listening to a 'Respect Song Video'.

Then we had a long discussion about what Respect means, and what Disrespect means. Together students came up with what respect Looks like, Sounds Like, and Feels like...

A fun day of Music and Art

What a day of learning our students had with Matua Mel, our 'The Arts' specialist teacher!

In music the class created sound scape of 'The Storm' using loud and soft. They chose different instruments to represent different aspects of a storm...

They then used mixed media to create a picture of their houses in a storm and added some words that we hear in a storm...
